THE PROBLEM:

A common misconception is that GPS transmits information via satellites and therefore vehicles can be  tracked absolutely realtime anywhere in Australia.

The fact is that GPS itself does not transmit data. GPS systems used for vehicle tracking do not transmit data, rather the in vehicle unit receives information from the GPS Satellites which enables the unit to calculate its (the vehicles) precise location.

In order for companies to know where their vehicle is, GPS position data needs to be transmitted from the vehicle back to base. Almost all GPS tracking systems sold in Australia send GPS position data back to base using the mobile phone network.

This means that real time GPS locations of vehicles / plant and equipment can only be achieved when the vehicle is in mobile phone range. Typically GPS tracking units have the ability to store several weeks trip information if a vehicle is out of mobile phone range. Once the vehicle comes back into mobile phone range, all trip data (including “snail trail”) routes are automatically transmitted back to base.
